CarePay makes appointments for top positions regionally

CarePay Limited (CarePay Kenya), the company behind M-TIBA, has announced the appointments of Moses Kuria and Dr Torooti Mwirigi as Managing Director and Commercial Director respectively in replacement of Kees Van Lede and Maarten Ras respectively.

Van Lede and Maarten Ras have since been appointed CEO and Commercial Director for CarePay Africa Region respectively.

Mr Kuria was previously CarePay’s Finance and Operations Director whence he led the expansion of the Kenya team from 38 to 97 people, a team now running services and payments for over 4 million people and 1,200 healthcare facilities registered on M-TIBA in Kenya, while Dr Mwirigi was previously the Project Director and Agile Coach at CarePay- responsible for overseeing development projects on the M-TIBA platform.

John Ngumi, Board Chairman CarePay Kenya, says, “Moses and Torooti are incredibly accomplished business leaders – who are passionate about innovation in healthcare. They’ve been instrumental in our success in Kenya and driving the use of technology to help our country towards universal health coverage. It was an easy decision for the Board to have these young and talented Kenyans taking on leadership of the company.”

Moses Kuria, Managing Director, CarePay Kenya, said, “We’d like to thank Kees and Maarten for their contribution to scaling CarePay and M-TIBA in Kenya. CarePay and M-TIBA are recognised globally as scalable solutions to some of the huge challenges we face in accessing and affording healthcare. We’re in a great place to support the push for Universal Health Coverage in Kenya and to provide a springboard for CarePay’s regional expansion.”

PharmAccess Foundation and Safaricom are founding partners of CarePay Kenya. PharmAccess Foundation recently deployed M-TIBA for registrations on Universal Health Coverage in three pilot Counties (Nyeri, Kisumu and Machakos). CarePay originally built M-TIBA to run on Safaricom’s M-PESA service.

CarePay International is now deploying this platform technology regionally. It was recently appointed by Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) and Kwara Health Insurance Fund (KHIF) to run registrations and scheme administration for mandatory health insurance schemes covering over 30 million Nigerians.

CarePay gives administrators a view of how healthcare is being utilised and paid for. It informs decision-making on investments, epidemic responses, and quality of care. CarePay digitally connects health payers (insurers and donors), beneficiaries and healthcare providers across one platform. This means greater accountability and speed – reducing the time to settle an insurance claim from an average 2.5 months to less than 48 hours.
